Inukshuk

The first thing this painting does is quiet the room. A massive stone figure (inukshuk) stands at Vancouver’s water’s edge, its dark silhouette carved against a sky that’s burning itself out in shades of gold, orange, and fading blue. It feels like a guardian that has stood there for a long time, watching countless days end exactly like this. There’s a weight to it, a sense of endurance. Even as the light slips away, the figure doesn’t move. It just keeps witnessing.

The sunset is powerful and a little bittersweet. The colors are rich and intense, echoing that strange mix of peace and melancholy you feel at the end of an important day, the kind where you’re not quite ready to let go, but you know you must. The sea below catches that light in broken fragments, the waves small but restless, like lingering thoughts you can’t fully quiet.

In the distance, the ship is a tiny but important detail. It adds a sense of journey and separation. Someone is leaving or arriving, simply passing by this timeless watcher on the shore. It hints at stories you’ll never fully know, and that mystery pulls you in.

“An inukshuk is a figure made of piled stones or boulders constructed to communicate with humans throughout the Arctic. Traditionally constructed by the Inuit, inuksuit are integral to Inuit culture and are often intertwined with representations of Canada and the North.”
