In 2018, my husband and I visited Shanghai, China with a few additional cities accessible via the bullet train. Built in 1991, the China National Tea Museum in Hangzhou celebrates the country’s long history of tea as one of China’s greatest treasures. Encompassing 5.4 acres (2.2 hectares), it’s an excellent place to learn about tea and see it being grown. The grounds are especially beautiful, with a running river and small waterfalls. My painting is based on a photo I took the day we visited.

The artwork is a landscape painting that falls under the Impressionist style. The Impressionism movement is characterized by the depiction of light and movement, with a focus on capturing a moment in time rather than the finer details. This piece features a natural scene with flowing water, greenery, and the use of vibrant colors, particularly in the foliage and the water. The brushwork appears loose and textured, contributing to a sense of motion and fluidity, especially in the water.
