Autumn Birch Trees
When I was a child, I spent many summers in L’Annonciation, Quebec, Canada (now part of Rivière-Rouge). I always remember the birch trees surrounding Lac Lanthier, with their occasional peeling bark. We would hike through the woods, picking up pieces of fallen bark to write letters on. Yellow birch was named Quebec’s official tree on November 17, 1993. Like all birches, it may be tapped in spring. The sap flows freely but it takes a lot to produce a small quantity of syrup. The sap may also be fermented and made into beer.
